1 Light is rather different from the other parameters but is extremelyimportant. Animals vary greatly in their requirements, whichbemay quite complex, involving light quality (wavelength, natural, eg sunlight, composition), quantity (light intensity), daylength (patterns of lighvdark) and variation in space (so that animals can seek what they want at different times). Some animals prefer to live in the dark (it follows that there is no satisfactory way in which such animals can be exhibited, for example).

Now, a man can sustain a loss of money, but this does not necessarily involve suffering. A lizard will voluntarily detach its tail, in order to escape a predator. In any event, it grows a new one, so the loss is a temporary one. People may continue on a walking tour with badly blistered feet: suffering is surely independent of the reasons for it? The idea that welfare is chiefly related to the ability to cope with stress leads to the view that either suffering only occurs when an animal is unable to cope with stress or that suffering does not necessarily mean poor welfare.
