It rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom, and revived within me a sense of my own manhood. It recalled the departed self-confidence, and inspired me again with a determination to be free. com - licensed to Taiwan eBook Consortium - PalgraveConnect - 2011-03-02 in such resistance is the person who has had to: living in an anarchist utopia of freedom and non-domination might leave one’s independence stunted. The anarchic utopian citizen is revealed as a lotus-eater without character or goals, which must be shaped by choice and resistance: Anarchist Perfectionism need some pricks to kick against (the allusion is to Acts 9:5).

What pleasure can we have To war with evil? Is there any peace In ever climbing up the climbing wave? All things have rest, and ripen toward the grave In silence; ripen, fall and cease: Give us long rest or death, dark death, or dreamful ease. (Tennyson, 1953: 52) If independence is part of flourishing, then the anarchic citizen is not flourishing. The anarchist condition is not necessary for the development of independence, either, because some of our best examples of the development of independence are examples of resistance to tyranny and enslavement.

Anarchic society not only is not enough for the development of independence, it may be altogether wrong for that development: not just a barren soil but a poisoned one. My second reason for contesting the anarchist perfectionist claim that the condition of development of independence is a free, nondominating society is that I have come to be suspicious of too-quick generalisations about the nature and conditions of the good life. Human development is complex and various, and if we are to understand it, I think we would do better to examine the development, successes and failures of particular human lives – Douglass’s life, for instance – before rushing to generalise.
