Example text

The zoo appears to have had several hundred keepers and some of the birds appear to have been kept for their feathers. Similar menageries existed in other Aztec cities, including a large collection at Texcoco. In 1552 Crown Prince Maximilian of Austria created a deer park and menagerie around the castle at Ebersdorf, near Vienna. He brought exotic animals to his park, including an Indian elephant. Maximilian established another park at Katterburg containing deer, birds and fish, and a menagerie at the castle of Neugebäude.

The zoo contained cleverly designed exhibits which appeared to house carnivores and herbivores together, but in reality they were separated by hidden moats. Prior to building these moated enclosures Hagenbeck investigated the jumping abilities of the animals. As well as running his own zoo, he also supplied many wellknown zoos with animals. Hagenbeck’s zoo was destroyed by bombing in 1943, but was rebuilt after the end of the Second World War. Edinburgh Zoo opened in 1913 and used many of Hagenbeck’s innovations, as have many other zoos since.
