Reference has already been made to studies of the relative solubilities of the different optical forms. Phosphotunystic Acid This precipitant in strong acid solution has for long been widely used for the basic amino acids arginine, histidine, and lysine. Ammonia, if present, is also precipitated. It is not, however, liberated when the phosphotungstates are decomposed with amyl alcohol-ether at acid pH (323). , 315). Recently Van Slyke and colleagues (324,325) have made detailed studies of the conditions for optimum precipitation of single and mixed basic amino acids by phosphotungstic acid, and of the composition of the precipitates.

Bailey, et al. (314) (cf. ’ Cupric Compounds Copper ‘salts’ of amino acids have been employed for isolation and characterization since the earliest days of protein chemistry. The highly insoluble copper salt is today in general use for the last stages of isolating aspartic acid (314).

The accuracy of the determination is about15 per cent except when the amount of a particular amino acid is very small.
